Abusers and perpetrators often use immigration status as a tool to further abuse a survivor of violence. In response advocates should know all appropriate tactics at their disposal to empower immigrant victims to escape violence and hold their perpetrators accountable.
Join us for this webinar to learn how recent immigration developments may affect immigrant survivors of crime and practical ways in which advocates can help. This webinar is funded by the Victims of Crime Act.
Advocates for victims of crime, including direct and legal service providers for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, and trafficking, legal advocates and anyone interested in assisting undocumented survivors of violence.
After the webinar, participants will be better able to:
- Appreciate the particular vulnerabilities and patterns of victimization that come
along with being a noncitizen
- Identify ways to empower immigrant crime victims to obtain protection
- Implement enhanced survivor and family safety planning for immigrant crime victims
Instructor: Elinor, or “Elly” Jordan is a Staff Attorney at the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence and has several years of experience advocating for individuals who have been victimized. Elly’s work at the Coalition is focused on enhancing legal services to victims of crime through training, resources, and litigation. Elly previously represented immigrant victims of abuse and neglect at the Michigan State University College of Law Immigration Law Clinic, and is an adjunct professor of Refugee & Asylum Law at Michigan State.
