Free! MCEDSV Confidentiality Training III

Wednesday, January 31, 2017,  12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Description:
Once we are given the privilege of knowing a survivor's story, we are responsible to allow them to take full ownership of their information. This series is designed to help you do just that -- without leaving your desk!

Audience:
Attorneys and advocates for victims of crime, including legal service providers for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, and trafficking, legal advocates and anyone interested in assisting survivors.

Objectives:
Throught this series participants will:

  • Gain or refresh knowledge on the state and federal laws touching on confidentiality and privilege as they pertain to various helpers who support survivors.
  • Learn strategies to maintain file confidentiality and assist clients in taking control over their information, for example, how to seek removal of information that has been posted online or quash a subpoena seeking private details.
  • Get tips on how to request that a case proceed under pseudonym, appear as a crime victim advocate, and otherwise ask for the court's help in protecting your client's personal information.

Instructor: Elinor, or “Elly” Jordan is a Staff Attorney at the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence and has several years of experience advocating for individuals who have been victimized.  Elly’s work at the Coalition is focused on enhancing legal services to victims of crime through training, resources, and litigation. Elly previously represented immigrant victims of abuse and neglect at the Michigan State University College of Law Immigration Law Clinic, and is an adjunct professor of Refugee & Asylum Law at Michigan State.
