PPO 101: Basic Introduction to Personal Protection Orders (Part One of PPO University: A Five-Part Webinar Series for Advocates)

This webinar is the first of a 5-part series. It will provide a basic introduction to Michigan personal protection orders (PPOs), covering the following topics:

  1. PPOs as a tool for empowerment
  2. Basic features of PPOs
    • Types of PPOs
    • Petitioner/respondent relationships
    • Minors
    • Relief the court can provide
    • Behavior that can be restrained
    • Choosing the right form

 

Faculty for this webinar are:

Mary Lovik, J.D., has been a member of the MDVSAPTB staff since 2001, and serves as its Legal Director. Ms. Lovik’s duties include providing technical assistance to various governmental agencies in developing legislative and policy initiatives affecting survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Prior to joining the MDVSAPTB staff, Ms. Lovik served as Publications Administrator at the Michigan Judicial Institute, where she authored and oversaw production of judicial benchbooks and other instructional materials for state court judges and staff. She is the original author of the judicial benchbook, Domestic Violence: A Guide to Civil & Criminal Proceedings, first published by the Michigan Judicial Institute in 1998. Ms. Lovik has also taught Domestic Violence Law as an adjunct professor at the Michigan State University College of Law

Kathy Hagenian is currently MCEDSV Executive Policy Director, a position she has held since August 1996. She is widely respected for her work with survivors, leadership in several legislative initiatives, participation in numerous multi-disciplinary task forces and workgroups, and expertise as a trainer. Ms. Hagenian has co-authored reports and manuals on domestic and sexual violence, including, Fighting for Justice for Battered Women: A Law and Advocacy Manual, The Response to Sexual Assault: Removing Barriers to Services and Justice, and Confidentiality Policy Considerations and Recommendations: A Resource Manual for Michigan Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Programs.

Participation in the PPO 101 webinar will be helpful for individuals interested in attending future sessions, but is not required for them.
